Resilience in Mental Health & Social Workers

How Kingston adult social care team transformed culture with resilience

The challenge

Change and culture are high on the agenda of Adult Social Care Directors due to the Care Act 2014. It has been described as one of the most ambitious goals of public sector reform in recent times.

The senior team recognised that to address those challenges in a financially stressed system they required a new set of social work skills and a new mindset to maximise the potential of the team, raise resilience and serve their community.

How we helped

We worked with 100 front line Social Workers and Mental Health Professionals to build personal and team resilience to accelerate and sustain transformational change.

The resilience programme was a key driver of immediate improvements in engagement levels, talent retention, employee satisfaction and wellbeing. It was also described as a key influencer and positive impact on the quality and provision of services.

The results speak for themselves

Teams were thriving within the first three months

High engagement with digital resources and champion meetings validated that the teams were hungry for personalised support. Regular face-to-face discovery sessions had full attendance with participants sharing how they had developed and used the resilience skills base to build strength at work, with their clients and in their personal lives.

Within the first three months, the training significantly impacted both behaviour change and employee experience.

"Working with teams to understand how staff manage their physical and mental wellbeing, it was clear that a new approach was needed. We wanted to improve the way our people manage their wellbeing. Give them the tools to understand and improve their ability to deal with change and encourage staff to be mindful of each others' wellbeing."
Jayne Bearman - Director

When people thrive, the organisation thrives

Challenging targets were overachieved by 10% and we saw improvements in engagement levels, talent retention, employee satisfaction and wellbeing. This equates to a financial saving of over £500k per annum in tangible terms and we moved from the worst performing Borough in London to second best, achieving Beacon Status. We are also very proud The Public Sector Transformation Awards have awarded the Adult Social Care team from Kingston Council (RBK) a Certificate of Excellence.

Resilience, Wellbeing & Engagement

Improving Culture

From day one the team began implementing their new resilience skills within their teams and the community they serve.

Two years later Resilience Champions within the team continue to focus on maintaining resilience skills and training new members. Continued access to the Resilience App and Digital Skills Academy gives them all they need to ensure resilience is more than a buzzword. It is skills based and it is part of the culture.
